Catholic Campaign for Human Development readies for best-ever annual collection

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the anti-poverty initiative of the U.S. Bishops, will hold its annual collection Nov. 18 and 19 in all of the nation's Catholic churches.

Last year, parishioners in the Archdiocese of Baltimore gave a record $197,141. That money is used to give grants on both national and local levels to self-help groups that are working to change the root causes of poverty.

Here in Baltimore, $129,500 in grants were awarded to projects involving such issues as health care, housing and education.

This year, the campaign hopes to raise $200,000.
